Editing Services

I offer a variety of editing services, including Copy Editing, Stylistic Editing, Structural Editing, and Proofreading. Please see the descriptions below to determine what service(s) you are looking for.

In order to provide a firm quote for editing services, I may ask for a short sample of your document to see what kind of changes are needed. The quote will depend on the strength of the existing writing and design elements, the clarity of formatting and layout, and any additional technical requirements that need to be checked.

Please note that editing is only one of the jobs I hold. For shorter documents (<50 pages), I typically require a minimum of 2-3 weeks to complete an edit. For longer documents, including dissertations, I typically require 4-6 weeks. Depending on my workload, I am sometimes able to complete edits in less time for an added ('rush') fee, so please let me know if there is an urgency to your request.

I approach editing, writing, and overall communication practices from a socially conscious, critical, and engaged perspective. Sliding scale rates are available for unemployed and underemployed folks, including graduate students, artists, those facing accessibility barriers, and those who identify as LGBTQ, Black, Indigenous, and/or POC. Copy Editing

Copy Editing is the service that is most requested. It involves checking grammar, spelling, and punctuation, improving sentence structure and clarity, and checking for consistency within the document. It generally occurs after the text of a document has been fully drafted but before layout and design elements have been finalized.

Stylistic Editing

Stylistic Editing involves editing to clarify meaning, enhance coherence and flow, strengthen transitions, and refine overall language use. It generally occurs as part of a Structural Edit and/or as part of a Copy Edit rather than as its own stage of editing.

Structural Editing

Structural Editing is a heavier, more-involved edit. It involves assessing and shaping written material to improve its organization, content, and overall tone. This type of editing generally occurs in the draft stages of writing and can be combined with coaching services.

Proofreading

Proofreading occurs after a document has already been edited, and after layout and design elements have been more or less finalized. It is the "final catch" stage for text and formatting errors.
