Stylistic Editing

Stylistic Editing involves editing to clarify meaning, enhance coherence and flow, and refine language use in written text. It generally occurs as part of a Structural Edit and/or as part of a Copy Edit rather than as its own stage of editing.

• Improving word choice, paragraph organization, and sentence construction to more effectively convey meaning;

• Adjusting the length and structure of sentences and paragraphs to ensure readability, flow, and variety or consistency, as appropriate to the project;

• Revising sentences, paragraphs, and passages to resolve ambiguities, ensure logical connections, and clarify the meaning or intention;

• Ensuring that transitions between sentences and between paragraphs are smooth and support the coherent development of the text as a whole;

• Establishing, maintaining, or enhancing tone, mood, style, and authorial voice and level of formality appropriate to the content and for the intended audience, medium, and purpose; and

• Eliminating wordiness.
